I was born in the decade of ray bans, big shoulder pads, Milli Vanilli, Marky Mark and MC Hammer. I just squeezed into Generation X. So the current generation of youth I’m surrounded by, Generation Y, or the “instant generation”, see us as the “mature ones”. Rightly so though, with all these years tucked under my belt (which is getting tighter and tighter), use Gneration Xers and early Generation Yers are supposed to be the ones who are paving the way, leading as examples, both spiritually and in life (both mutually non-exclusive).
But what has happened to us? What has happened to my generation of young adults who were so passionate just a few years ago, but now we’ve turned to our own strengths, desires, and plans for our own lives. Our desire to live and serve God for the rest of our lives have turned into this deadline and that deadline, financial issues, relationships etc etc etc.
Driving in the car to work, listening to a worship song on repeat, it made me think of me and my generation. On Friday night we sang the words “I see a generation, rising up to take the place, with selfless faith…”. Those who know me know that I refuse to believe that when we start the next phase of life when we enter the workforce, we lose passion, lose fire, lose zeal for service, for the lost, and for our Lord.
I want to be a generation who stands on the playing and, not on the sidelines; a generation who seeks after kingdom crowns and lays our earthly crowns at the foot of the cross; a generation who cares more about the community and the injustices that surround them, rather than their next payrise; a generation which stands up for purity and righteousness, rather than conform to the fading morality of the world; a generation that will use their gifts for the kingdom and not for themselves; a generation who doesnt take their freedom to worship for granted, but has an inquenchable desire for one thing and one thing only - their Lord and Saviour.
This is the generation of people who we SHOULD be and CAN be. Let’s make a change, in our lives and in the world around us - LET’S BE THAT GENERATION!!
